Operating Rich of
Peak (ROP)
With the Ultimate Bar Graph (UBG-16)
The UBG-16 provides many excellent features to help you operate your engine on
the rich side of peak (ROP).
The UBG-16 makes it easy to lean your engine on the rich side of peak EGT (ROP).
Just place it in the “Lean” mode and start the leaning process. The UBG-16 will
display the cylinder that first reached peak EGT the last time you leaned your
engine, as well as the current EGT and CHT readings. The word “LEAN” will appear
below the bars, followed by the EGT reading for that cylinder (see the picture
below left).
During the leaning process, the UBG-16 will
automatically display the first cylinder that reached peak EGT and its
temperature (see middle picture above). By pushing the Mode switch to the left,
the digital display will show the exact number of degrees the leanest cylinder
is below peak EGT (see right picture above). You can now enrich the mixture to
precisely lean the engine to any temperature you choose on the rich side of peak
EGT (ROP). Quick, easy and precise.

Another method of leaning, unique to the
UBG-16, is to set the operating range of the bar graph display to match the
leaning range of your engine. If the bars are running close to the bottom of
the display (see left picture), a quick glance tells you that your engine is
running rich. If the bars are running close to the top of the display (see
right picture), a quick glance tells you that your engine is running lean.

Since the top bar was set to appear at peak EGT
for the leanest cylinder, it’s easy to see how much below peak that cylinder is
running. This means it won’t be necessary to find peak EGT each time you lean.
This method works great and can save time as long as the leanest cylinder peaks
close to the same EGT during each flight, which is usually the case.
On takeoff, look for all the bars to be close to the bottom of
the display. When climbing or during high altitude takeoffs, lean to keep the
bars off the bottom of the display. When leaning, keep the leanest cylinder’s
bars just below the top of the display (depending on how far rich of peak you
want to run your engine).
